So to start, what is the Lapidus?
It is a procedure performed to treat bunion deformities that involves the fusion of the first metatarsal base with the medial cuneiform i.e. the first metatarsocuneiform joint. It is often used for patients with more severe bunions and if there’s instability of the first metatarsocuneiform joint.
The procedure is advantageous because it addresses both the bunion deformity and the underlying issue of instability in the metatarsal bone.
How is the Lapidus done?
The surgeon makes an incision on the top of the foot. To realign the toe, the first metatarsal is rotated to correct the deformity. The bony bump (the bunion) is also removed. Screws and plates are then used to help stabilize the joint while it heals and fuses. The goal is to prevent movement at the joint, allowing the bones to fuse together over time.
How is the recovery from the Lapidus?
Immediately after surgery, you’ll need to wear a splint or a cast to protect the foot and limit movement. You will be instructed to avoid putting weight on the operated foot for a period of 6-8 weeks or longer depending on healing. Once the fusion has started to heal, you will start physical therapy. The fusion site typically takes around 8-12 weeks to heal, but full recovery may take up to 6 months with a gradual return to activity throughout the recovery process.
What is the success rate of the Lapidus?
Numerous studies show the success rate is around 90-95% depending on certain factors meaning that there is a generally high fusion rate with low levels of recurrence and complications.
What are the potential risks and complications of the Lapidus?
Though the potential is low, there are risks and complications associated with this procedure. As with any surgery, there is a chance of infection at the surgical site. Additionally, the bones may not fuse together properly. The nerves in the area are retracted during the procedure which could cause short-term numbness or tingling. In some cases, the screws or plates used to stabilize the joint may loosen or break. These are the most commonly seen risks/complications associated with this procedure however there are others.
